NKOTW – Devil Maknaes

Something has been getting at me for a long time now. Something evil and sinister. Something addictive and irresistible. Something I can’t ignore any longer.

And you should be warned.

This thing that’s infected me is subversive and stealth in its evil charms. It worms its way into your life, steals your heart…and then runs away, laughing.

It’s deadly and you should avoid it while you can.

It’s too late for me. But you can be saved.

Saved from what?

The devil maknae.

The youngest in the group. The one designed to be the “cute” one. The one who destroys hearts with his sweet smile and killer moves. The manly/boyish baby of the group. The evil one.

Run! Run as fast as you can! No one is safe. Especially a noona. That is why the devil maknae is my Noona Killer of the Week.

Who are these minions of darkness, you ask? Well, don’t be alarmed, but they’re everywhere in K-Pop Land.Β  Probably infiltrating your favorite group right now!

What’s my criteria for a noona-killing devil maknae? Well, he has to be at least 18 in American age. He also has to have celebrated his Korean coming-of-age. That leaves out maknaes such as GOT7’s Yugyeom (16), Jungkook from BTS (16), and Zelo from B.A.P (17). Sorry boys. πŸ™‚

Here are some of the culprits who actually meet my criteria. These are the boys to watch out for–the ones who have stomped on my heart with evil glee:

Taemin – SHINee

DOB: July 18, 1993 (American Age: 20)

A maknae TaeminI learned the word “maknae” because of Taemin. Girls kept talking about “the cute maknae” in SHINee, so I had to learn what a “maknae” was!

Why did I learn what it was?!

Taemin is like the old soul and the baby of the group in one person. Sometimes I forget just how young he is (he’s not even 21 yet!) but I also can’t believe he’s not that little boy from Replay days anymore. I feel like he’s been around forever, but he’s still just a kid!

A gorgeous dancer, a beautiful singer, and almost the tallest in the group (watch out, Minho! Taemin’s still growing!), Taemin is not only the complete package, but for me he will always be the original devil maknae.

Gongchan – B1A4

DOB: August 14, 1993 (American Age: 20)

A maknae Gongchan 2

B1A4’s maknae and visual has one of the most beautiful faces in K-Pop. I’d even venture to say Gongchan has one of the most beautiful faces in the world! How can anyone ever argue against that? Just look at that face!

But Gongchan’s not just a pretty face. He is also the charmer of the group. At least to me. Just one wink and I swoon like a school girl. And he’s not even my bias in the group!

Actually, Gongchan would be my bias, if not for the whole pesky “maknae” thing. I make it a point never to pick the baby as my bias. Just a silly rule I have.

But even if Gongchan weren’t the maknae, I couldn’t pick him. My daughter called dibs already. πŸ™‚

Sungjong – INFINITE

DOB: September 3, 1993 (American Age: 20)

A maknae Sungjong 2

Ah, Sungjong. I just wanna squish you and make you cupcakes and buy you a puppy.

He’s so dang cute! I’ve met him in person, and he’s even cuter up close. And he’s so polite and sweet. He’s just made to make a noona sigh.

This maknae brings out every maternal instinct I’ve ever had and makes me want to baby him. I don’t know why. Maybe because I’ve watched him grow up, yet he still looks like that little boy from four years ago.

INFINITE’s maknae is still just as lanky–he’s all arms and legs–but now he’s a bit taller and manlier. But that baby face will always be made for aegyo.

Sehun – EXO, EXO-K

DOB: April 12, 1994 (American Age: 20)

A maknae Sehun 2

If the dictionary ever defined “devil maknae”, this boy’s picture would accompany the definition. To me, Sehunnie IS the devil maknae.

Sehun has been a bias-list ruiner from the word “go” and he’s only gotten worse as he’s matured. That face, that height, those dance moves. That naughty smirk.

I call him “Satan-hun” only half-jokingly.

He is bratty and childish AND sexy and sultry all at once. How is that even possible?!

He may not have a lot of lines in EXO’s songs but his dancing more than makes up for it.

Just don’t ever look him in the eye. That stare is deadly.

Sungjae – BtoB

DOB: May 2, 1995 (American age: 19)

a maknae SungjaeThis boy is a strange combination of ridiculously handsome and ridiculously goofy. And somehow it really works for him.

Sometimes he can be the best-looking boy you’ve ever seen in your life.

And sometimes he can be this:

Sometimes his voice is so angelic and I want to share it with everyone. And sometimes his antics make me suffer from second-hand embarrassment and I want to keep him to myself.

It’s a rare idol who can be so beautiful and also be the 4D of the group. And I love him for it.

Hyuk – VIXX

DOB: July 5, 1995 (American age: 18)

A maknae HyukHyukkie is probably my favorite maknae of the bunch. He’s cute and charming. He shines in variety shows. He’s the tallest of a very tall group. He’s coming into his own as a dancer. And he’s even getting more lines to sing! Good job, Hyuk!

I fell in noona love for baby Hyuk when I watched him on “MyDol”, the Mnet reality show that documented the formation of VIXX.

He was treated not so well by some of the other trainees, and it made me sad. I know it all turned out for the best in the end, but it was hard to watch the others ignore him as he tried so hard to fit in and do well. He gained a very special place in my heart for all his hardships and enduring positivity during that time. It just made me want to root for the kid!

Hyuk is the perfect blend of manly and boyish. He’s an adorable boy full of youthful exuberance in one moment,

and a masculine hunk of a man in the next.

Add a few more years to him, and Hyuk will be a leading man, a force of nature, and a superstar. I’m looking forward to the Hyuk of five years from now.

Changjo – TEENTOP

DOB: November 16, 1995 (American Age: 18)

A maknae ChangjoTo be honest, I never really paid much attention to TEENTOP or Changjo until about a year ago. I almost wrote them off as being too young. But then I gave their music a chance and totally fell in love with it. So many great songs!

Still, I never had a bias. Until I saw Changjo dance. Now, I know my own rule prevents me from choosing a maknae as a bias but, in my defense, I didn’t know he was the maknae.

I saw TEENTOP in concert back in March of this year, and my seats were not the greatest. All I noticed, at first, was this tall, dark-haired figure who could glide across the floor like a dream.

That was it. I fell for the tallest member. How was I to know it was the maknae?!

Wow! Did he grow up!

a maknae changjo 2

I’m still learning new things about Changjo, since I don’t know about him as well as the other maknaes on this list. But that doesn’t mean I think less of him. After all, he is my bias-who-shouldn’t-really-be-my-bias-because-he’s-the-maknae.

Who is your favorite maknae? Someone here? Someone not on my list? And does he stomp on your noona heart the way Sehun does mine? Let me know!
